ORIENTATION CAMP AT EL RANCHO

WAIKANAE: 25-26 July 2009

On Saturday July 25th, the selected students from AFS Pasifika Porirua and their team of volunteers met up for a weekend of getting ready for their intercultural exchange and getting to know each other.

A few introduction games followed by dinner and more activities culminated in a language immersion experience that was incredibly eye-opening for the students. Each leader took a small group of students and conducted an activity in a foreign language with scenes being acted out in Portuguese, Spanish, Cambodian and Japanese. The students were definitely challenged when they couldn’t understand their leaders!

A few more highlights included a lesson on language and life in Japan and a ‘blindfold’ game. Students got into pairs and had to lead their partner (who was blind folded around a crazy course with solely verbal instructions), demonstrating the importance of trust and communication!

Overall, the weekend was a huge success and great way for the students to bond with one another and prepare for their exchange to Japan.
