Karez's Japan Experience

Talofa, my name is Karez Hunt Tiumalu from Bishop Viard College, in Porirua and I was one of the ten Pacifika scholarship students that were chosen to go to Japan for two weeks.

The Land of the Rising Sun

When I first found out I was going to Japan I was in denial, because I thought that people were just joking around with me, but then I got called up to the school hall about a meeting. At first I got there and already I was confused because there was a bunch of year 11 and one other year 12 student in there and our high achievers teacher, now I know I was a high achiever but this was like a puzzle a genius had to figure out, this was because I didn’t know what on earth was going on. Then suddenly the news was broken to me and the nine other students and I were over the moon.

I currently spend a lot of my free time volunteering for this awesome organisation

I am a New Zealand-born Niuean married (now Pennie Otto) to a Native Samoan and have two daughters. I've lived most of my life in Mangere, South Auckland where my parents still reside. I have been teaching English for over 10 years at local high schools and would love to help our young people see more of the world and what it has to offer. I lived in Puerto Cortes with the Stanley and Castellanos Families.

Mere Mulu in South Africa

Mere Mulu went to South Africa in 2000 on the AFS Young Adults Programme.

Stephen Paul Mataipule in Brazil

Stephen Paul Mataipule went to Brazil in 2001 on the Year Programme.

I decided to go on an AFS exchange after someone came to my school at the time, Porirua College, and started handing out pamphlets. I'm not too sure why I chose Brazil, I had seen ads and the carnivals on TV and so I thought it would be a good place to go. For me the highlight of my exchange was just being part of a different side of life, meeting new people, and participating in Brazilian life in general.
